In 2018, Artist’s paintings for the “Life to Art - A Portuguese-American Story in Art” were leaning against the walls at the Sun Gallery in Hayward ready to hang for the show. I recognized some of the big name artists- Mel Ramos, Jerald Silva, David King among others. I would have loved to see the art works up and to meet the artists during their reception. However, I could not attend for whatever reasons I had at that time. Then on my long drive home, I had an epiphany to show their great works at our center in Sacramento.   The Sacramento Fine Arts Center (SFAC) has been a big part of my art experience for many years and showing works of this caliber was an exciting thought. After getting a contact number (of Joao de Brito, one of the Portuguese/American artists who have been the forerunner in highlighting the show) from Dorsi Dias – director form Sun Gallery, A proposal was written and presented to the board in September, 2018. Joao at the time sensed urgency as many of these artists were up in their years. (Sadly, Mel Ramos and Maxine Olson died in 2019) Because of scheduling and my personal life, show was pushed to 2020. I also feel the importance in honoring these accomplished artists who have immigrated or their parents have from Portugal. I think it is unique and noteworthy of their accomplishments and to have somehow connected with each other - having a common heritage. We celebrate their life in art with “Art Lives – The Portuguese American Legacy.”

Jamie S. Perry has been regarded as one of the premiere Cat Artists in the United States. Using only colored pencils on paper, she illustrated her feline fantasies and rendered witty portraits of prize-winning pedigreed show cats and household pets. Jamie now feels her creative spark reigniting in her kitchen. Cooking has become her recreation and therapy. “I had a great teacher, and I’m amazed at what I’ve learned just through osmosis!  It’s another art form to explore, and I’m learning to play again!” said Jamie. She is in the process of designing workshops to help people discover and use their creative selves.
